The 360 camera that solves the format’s oldest complaint. With 8K to crop into, reframed footage finally looks like proper video rather than a compromise — and replaceable lenses turn the most fragile part of the design into a consumable.

Our take

GoPro Max 2 review: 8K 360 video and the end of the selfie stick

GoPro’s second-generation 360 camera shoots 8K spherical video, takes replaceable lenses and erases your extension pole entirely. Here is what that buys you in practice, and who actually needs it.

What we like

  • 8K 360 capture finally makes reframed clips genuinely sharp
  • Replaceable lenses — a scratch no longer ruins the camera
  • Excellent single-lens mode at up to 4K60
  • Waterproof to 5m with no housing

What to watch

  • Large files demand a fast card and a capable computer
  • Editing 360 footage is still a time commitment
  • More expensive than a conventional action camera
  • Dual lenses need care in a bag

Quick answers

Does the GoPro Max 2 really shoot 8K?

Yes — up to 8K (7680×3840) at 30fps in 360 mode. That resolution is spread across the full sphere, which is exactly the point: when you crop a flat 16:9 clip out of it, you have enough pixels left for a genuinely sharp result.

Are the lenses replaceable?

They are, and it is one of the best things about the camera. Exposed 360 lenses inevitably pick up scratches, and on older cameras that meant a permanent flaw in every shot. Here you swap the damaged lens and carry on.

Can it be used as a normal action camera?

Yes. Single-lens mode shoots conventional wide footage at up to 4K60, so it works as a regular action camera when you do not want the extra editing work.
