Our take
Panasonic Lumix FT7 review: a tough camera with a viewfinder
Waterproof, freezeproof and shockproof, with a built-in viewfinder almost no rugged camera offers. The FT7 is built for the pool, the piste and the coast path.
What we like
- Genuinely rugged — water, shock and freeze resistant
- Built-in viewfinder, almost unique among tough cameras
- 4K video and 4K Photo
- No housing or case required
What to watch
- Small sensor limits image quality
- Lens is not especially fast
- Controls are fiddly with cold or wet hands
- Costs more than basic waterproof compacts
Quick answers
Why does a viewfinder matter on a waterproof camera?
Because these cameras are used on snow, water and beaches — the brightest environments there are, where a rear screen reflects so much light you are effectively guessing at framing. Almost no other rugged compact offers one.
Is the FT7 fully waterproof?
It is sealed against water to a rated depth, plus shock and freeze resistant, with no housing needed. Always check the door seals are clean and latched before swimming, and rinse with fresh water after sea or pool use.
Is it good for skiing?
Well suited — the freezeproof rating, the sealed body and the viewfinder all help in exactly those conditions. Gloved operation of the small buttons is the main irritation.
