Our take
Panasonic Lumix GX8 review: a rangefinder-style camera for street photography
A tilting corner viewfinder, weather sealing and dual stabilisation in a flat, discreet body. The GX8 is an enthusiast’s camera that has quietly become affordable.
What we like
- Tilting corner viewfinder is superb for discreet shooting
- Weather-sealed magnesium body
- Dual I.S. stabilisation
- Flat body suits small primes perfectly
What to watch
- Ageing autofocus
- Micro Four Thirds low-light limits
- Larger than some rangefinder-style rivals
- Discontinued, so support is winding down
Quick answers
Why is a corner viewfinder better for street photography?
Holding the camera to the side of your face rather than centrally is less conspicuous, and because this viewfinder tilts upward you can shoot from waist level while looking down — the classic discreet documentary technique, and much less intrusive than raising a camera to your eye.
Is the GX8 weather sealed?
Yes, in a magnesium alloy body, which is unusual for a rangefinder-styled camera and makes it far more usable in poor weather than its looks suggest.
Is it still worth buying?
If the handling appeals and the price is right. Autofocus and video are behind current cameras, but the body, viewfinder and stabilisation still deliver, and small Micro Four Thirds primes suit it beautifully.
