Our take

Polaroid Now Gen 3 review: the classic Polaroid, brought up to date

Full-size i-Type film, autofocus that picks the right lens for the distance, and the shape everyone pictures when you say Polaroid. This is the definitive modern one.

What we like

  • Full-size Polaroid prints with real presence
  • Autofocus system improves sharpness noticeably
  • Iconic design people recognise instantly
  • Double exposure and self-timer included

What to watch

  • Bulky compared with Instax cameras
  • Film is expensive per shot
  • Prints need protecting from light while developing
  • Exposure can still be unpredictable

Quick answers

What is i-Type film?

Polaroid’s current full-size format for modern cameras. It produces the classic large square image with the white border, and because these cameras have their own rechargeable battery the film packs do not need to include one — which keeps the cost slightly lower than Polaroid’s vintage-compatible 600 film.

Polaroid Now or Polaroid Go?

The Now uses full-size film and produces much larger prints; the Go is far smaller and cheaper but its prints are little. If the print is the point, buy the Now.

Does the autofocus really help?

Yes. The camera selects between lenses based on subject distance, which meaningfully improves sharpness compared with older fixed-focus Polaroids — historically one of the format’s biggest weaknesses.
