Our take

Canon EOS R50 review: the small mirrorless camera to buy first

Light, genuinely beginner-friendly and armed with Canon’s excellent subject-tracking autofocus. The EOS R50 is the easiest step up from a phone you can make.

What we like

  • Excellent subject detection autofocus for the price
  • Very light and comfortable to carry all day
  • Fully articulating screen suits video and selfies
  • Guided interface genuinely helps beginners

What to watch

  • Small RF-S lens range compared with rivals
  • No in-body stabilisation
  • Modest battery life
  • Single card slot and plastic build

Quick answers

Is the Canon EOS R50 good for beginners?

It is one of the best. The guided interface explains what settings do as you change them, the automatic modes are reliable, and the autofocus finds and holds faces without any input from you.

Does the EOS R50 have image stabilisation?

Not in the body. Stabilised RF lenses help, and video has electronic stabilisation, but handheld walking footage is less steady than on a camera with in-body stabilisation.

Canon EOS R50 or EOS R100?

The R50 has a fully articulating touchscreen, better autofocus and more video options. The R100 is cheaper with a fixed screen. If you can stretch to the R50, do — the screen alone is worth it.
