Our take
Fujifilm X-M5 review: small, light and full of character
Fujifilm’s compact APS-C body drops the viewfinder to save size and weight, keeps the film simulations, and lands at a much friendlier price than the X-S20.
What we like
- Genuinely small and light — a true carry-everywhere camera
- Film simulation dial makes the best feature immediate
- Strong video specification for the size
- Cheaper than the X-S20
What to watch
- No viewfinder — you compose on the screen
- No in-body stabilisation
- Small grip is less comfortable with big lenses
- Battery life is modest
Quick answers
Does the Fujifilm X-M5 have a viewfinder?
No. You compose using the rear screen, which is fine in most conditions but harder in bright sunlight. If you want a viewfinder, the X-S20 has one.
What is the film simulation dial?
A physical dial for switching between Fujifilm’s colour profiles. It puts the camera’s best feature under your thumb instead of three menus deep, and it encourages you to shoot with a look in mind rather than fixing things afterwards.
Is the X-M5 good for vlogging?
Yes — it is light, the screen articulates and the video specification is strong for the size. Without in-body stabilisation, walking shots need a stabilised lens or a gimbal.
