Our take

Instax Mini 99 review: the instant camera for people who want control

Colour effects, manual exposure control, double exposures and a proper analogue feel. The Mini 99 is the enthusiast’s Instax, and the most creative camera in the Mini range.

What we like

  • Built-in colour effects created optically, not digitally
  • Manual brightness control and double exposure mode
  • Two shutter buttons and a tripod socket for real composition
  • Premium build compared with entry-level Instax

What to watch

  • Considerably pricier than a Mini 12 or 13
  • Fully analogue — mistakes still cost you film
  • More to learn than a point-and-shoot Instax
  • Same small Mini print format

Quick answers

What are the colour effects on the Instax Mini 99?

The camera illuminates the film with coloured light as it exposes — faint tint, warm, cool, sepia and more. Because it happens optically at the moment of exposure rather than as a digital filter, results vary subtly with the scene, which is exactly the appeal.

Can you do double exposures?

Yes. Two exposures are laid onto one sheet of film, which is one of the most creative things you can do with instant photography and produces results you cannot plan precisely — part of the fun.

Is the Mini 99 good for beginners?

It is more camera than a beginner needs. Every mistake costs a sheet of film, and there is no screen to check results. Start with a Mini 12 and move up if the format grabs you.

Show the manufacturer description

The Fujifilm Instax Mini 99 Instant Camera updates the design and functions of mini 90 with greater colour effect controls. The classic design allows greater analogue operability with 2 mode dials. Twist the Colour Effect Dial and you've got six stunning analogue colour effects to fuel your creative freedom.

Use the Brightness Control Dial to choose from five levels of brightness. Combine this with Colour Effects, Double Exposure and more. Manually adjust the lens to reduce peripheral light, creating a more artistic feel in your photos.

Press and hold the shutter button to keep it open (for up to 10 seconds) and take pictures at night or of light trails. Bring lightness to dark interior shots with Indoor Mode; beautifully capturing the subject and background in focus. This mode reduces blur when subjects are moving.

Press the shutter twice to create pictures where images overlap on a single photo. Use Landscape Mode for a sharp picture when your subject is more than 3 m away. Macro Mode, on the other hand, allows for clear pictures of subjects 30 to 60 cm away.

Viewfinder: Real image finder, 0.37x, with target spot Display: LCD screen Lens Focal Length: f = 60 mm, 1:12.7. Macro mode (0.3m to 0.6m), standard mode (0.6m to 3.0m), landscape mode (3.0m to infinity) Print Size: 62mm x 46mm
