Our take

GoPro HERO review: the tiny, cheap GoPro that makes a lot of sense

Half the size, half the weight and a fraction of the price of a HERO13 Black. The little GoPro HERO drops the pro features and keeps the bit that matters — 4K footage from a camera you will actually take with you.

What we like

  • Genuinely tiny and light at around 86g
  • 4K video for well under the flagship price
  • Waterproof to 5m with no case
  • Uses the same enormous GoPro mount ecosystem

What to watch

  • No removable battery
  • Shorter recording time than a HERO13 Black
  • Fewer frame rate and colour options
  • Small screen makes menus fiddly

Quick answers

Is the GoPro HERO waterproof?

Yes, to 5m without a housing, which covers swimming, snorkelling and any amount of rain. That is half the depth rating of the HERO13 Black, so for scuba you want the bigger camera and a dive housing.

Does the GoPro HERO have a removable battery?

No — the battery is built in and charges over USB-C. That is the main compromise of the design. For long days out, carry a small power bank and top it up between activities.

Does it shoot 4K?

It does, at 30fps, along with 2.5K60 for smoother motion. It is not the resolution monster the flagship is, but 4K30 is more than most people ever export.
