The HERO13 Black is the most capable mainstream action camera you can buy, and the lens system is what makes it interesting rather than the sensor. If you are coming from a HERO10 or older, it is a big, obvious upgrade. If you own a HERO12 Black, keep it and…

Our take
GoPro HERO13 Black review: still the action camera to beat in 2026?
The HERO13 Black adds swappable HB-Series lenses and a bigger battery to a formula that already worked. Here is who should buy it, who should save money on a HERO12, and what it costs in the UK today.
What we like
- Excellent 5.3K60 footage with the best stabilisation in the category
- HB-Series magnetic lens mount opens up genuinely useful optics
- Larger 1900mAh Enduro battery finally lasts a full session
- Huge accessory ecosystem, most of it backwards compatible
What to watch
- Image quality is only a modest step up from the HERO12 Black
- Lens mods are an extra spend on top of an already premium camera
- Still runs warm on long, high-resolution takes
- Best features are gated behind the GoPro subscription for cloud and editing
Quick answers
Is the GoPro HERO13 Black waterproof without a case?
Yes. It is waterproof to 10m (33ft) straight out of the box with the door closed. For deeper diving you still want the official protective housing, which takes it well beyond recreational depths.
Does the HERO13 Black shoot 5.3K?
It does — up to 5.3K60, plus 4K120 and 2.7K240 for slow motion. Most people will shoot 4K60, which gives you sharp footage and room to crop or reframe for vertical without eating storage as quickly.
What is different about the HB-Series lenses?
The HERO13 Black detects a magnetically latched lens and switches to the right settings automatically. The Ultra Wide lens widens the field of view considerably, the Macro lens focuses close, and the Anamorphic lens gives a cinematic widescreen look. Older GoPro lens mods are not compatible.
