Our take
Panasonic HC-VX980 review: why a camcorder still beats a camera for some jobs
A 20x zoom, hours of continuous 4K recording and a shape designed to be held for a long time. For school plays and weddings, a camcorder remains the right tool.
What we like
- Records for hours without stopping or overheating
- 20x zoom with stabilisation designed for video
- Comfortable to hold for long periods
- Wireless multi-camera feature adds a second angle from a phone
What to watch
- Small sensor compared with hybrid cameras
- Less cinematic depth of field
- Camcorder styling looks dated
- Limited manual control for graded footage
Quick answers
Why buy a camcorder instead of a mirrorless camera?
Recording time, handling and zoom. Camcorders are designed to run for hours without overheating or hitting file limits, they are shaped to be held steadily for a long time, and their zooms are built to be operated smoothly while recording. For a two-hour school play, that combination wins easily.
What is the wireless multi-camera feature?
It lets you combine a feed from a smartphone with the camcorder’s own image, giving you a second angle picture-in-picture without a second operator — useful for events where you cannot be in two places.
Is the image as good as a mirrorless camera?
No. The sensor is much smaller, so low-light footage is noisier and you get far less background blur. What you get instead is reliability, reach and endurance.
