Panasonic’s TZ range has defined the pocket travel zoom for years. The Lumix TZ99 is the current model, and it keeps the formula — a very long zoom in a very small body — while updating the parts that had aged: the screen and the way photos get to your phone.
The zoom is still the point
A Leica-branded 24–720mm equivalent lens gives you 30x optical zoom. At the wide end it handles landscapes and interiors; at the long end it fills the frame with a distant building, bird or performer. No phone can do that optically, which is the whole reason this kind of camera still exists.
The modern touches
The 1,840k-dot touchscreen tilts a full 180 degrees, so it faces you for selfies. Bluetooth pairing and a dedicated send button move photos to your phone in one press — the part of travel photography that older cameras made tedious. 4K Photo records a burst at 30fps and lets you pick the perfect frame as an 8MP still.
The limits of the category
Fitting a 30x zoom into a pocket requires a small sensor, and small sensors struggle in dim light. Indoors and after sunset, expect more noise than from a larger-sensor camera. At full zoom the lens needs plenty of light and a steady hand.
Which TZ should you buy?
- TZ99 — the current model: 30x, flip screen, easy phone transfer.
- TZ90 — same zoom idea, older, usually cheaper.
- TZ80 — 60x reach if distance is everything.
- TZ100 — 1-inch sensor for much better image quality, with 20x zoom.
