Our take
Panasonic HC-VXF990 review: a 4K camcorder with a proper viewfinder
The same long-recording, long-zoom formula as its stablemate, with an electronic viewfinder added. For filming outdoors for hours, that viewfinder earns its place.
What we like
- Electronic viewfinder for bright outdoor filming
- 25x zoom with video-tuned stabilisation
- Long continuous recording
- Comfortable for extended handheld use
What to watch
- Small sensor by modern standards
- Bulkier than the viewfinder-less models
- Limited cinematic control
- Camcorder ergonomics are an acquired taste
Quick answers
Why does a camcorder need a viewfinder?
Because flip-out screens wash out in daylight, and because holding a camera against your face is much steadier than at arm’s length. For sports fields, beaches and outdoor ceremonies, both matter throughout a long shoot.
HC-VXF990 or HC-VX980?
The VX980 is the same basic idea without the viewfinder, slightly smaller and cheaper. If you film mainly indoors the VX980 is fine; if you film outdoors, pay for the viewfinder.
Is it worth buying a camcorder in 2026?
For long-form event recording, yes. Nothing else records for hours as reliably or zooms as smoothly while running. For short, cinematic clips, a mirrorless camera is the better buy.
