Most action camera upgrades chase resolution. The DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro did something more useful: it went after the everyday annoyances that actually ruin shoots.

This is the feature that sounds trivial and is not. Every action camera owner has, at some point, arrived somewhere with the camera and without the card — or filled a card halfway through the good part. With roughly an hour of 4K storage built in, the Action 5 Pro simply carries on recording. It is insurance you only appreciate once, and then never stop appreciating.
Waterproof to 20m
Twenty metres, no housing, is the deepest rating in the category and a genuine differentiator. Snorkelling, swimming, kayaking, shallow diving — all fine straight out of the box. Combined with a magnetic mount that you can operate in gloves or wet hands, it makes a strong case as the water camera to buy.
Screens you can actually see
Both displays are OLED, and outdoors that shows. Contrast holds up in direct sunlight where conventional LCD panels grey out, so framing selfie-style shots on a bright day stops being guesswork. It is a quiet, practical improvement.
Image quality
The 1/1.3-inch sensor delivers detailed, stable 4K with good low-light behaviour by action camera standards, and DJI’s stabilisation is a match for anything else on the market. Colour is a matter of taste: GoPro tends to produce punchier footage straight out of the camera, DJI a slightly flatter, more neutral file that responds well to grading.
Who it suits
Anyone whose hobby involves water, and anyone who has been caught out by storage. It is also a strong all-rounder for cycling, skiing and travel. If you want the newest imaging technology, the Action 6 and its variable aperture is the upgrade; if you want the most camera per pound, the Action 4 is still the value champion.
