Best waterproof cameras in the UK: pool, beach and diving

From cheap tough compacts to action cameras rated to 20m, here is what actually survives water — and how to stop yours flooding.

Waterproof cameras exist for the photographs you would never risk a phone on. The category spans cheap tough compacts to serious action cameras, and picking correctly is mostly about being honest about depth.

Four rules that stop cameras flooding

  1. Check the seal every single time. One grain of sand in the gasket is enough.
  2. Rinse in fresh water afterwards. Salt and chlorine degrade seals and corrode latches.
  3. Never open the door with wet hands or on a windy beach.
  4. Let it cool before opening. A warm camera taken into cold water can draw moisture inside when opened too soon.

Getting better underwater footage

Stay shallow, keep the sun behind you, and get much closer than feels natural — water reduces contrast fast, so anything more than a couple of metres away goes soft and blue. A red filter or a quick colour correction afterwards will transform your results.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most waterproof camera?

Among mainstream cameras, the DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro at 20m without a housing, with the Osmo Action 4 at 18m close behind. Most GoPro models manage 10m. Any of them can go deeper inside a dedicated dive housing.

Can I take a waterproof camera scuba diving?

Only with a proper dive housing. Built-in ratings cover swimming, snorkelling and watersports — recreational diving depths exceed them. Check the housing rating against your planned depth.

Why do underwater photos look blue?

Water absorbs red light quickly, so colour drains with depth. Staying shallow, keeping the sun behind you, and using a red filter or correcting colour in editing all help enormously.

How do waterproof cameras fail?

Almost always through the door seal — grit, sand or hair caught in the gasket, or a latch not fully closed. Rinse in fresh water after every sea or pool session and check the seal before each swim.
